Stage 1 of the Absa Cape Epic is always referred to as one of the most challenging of the race, and it was no different for the 2014 event. The stage was as tough as it was beautiful with the most spectacular views rewarded after the most demanding climbs.

Yesterday the second stage of the Absa CAPE EPIC 2014 took place. Again in the area around Arabella Wines near Robertson. 101 kilometres in distance and 1.550 climbing promised to be a little bit less heavy than the first stage, but due to heavy rain falls the single trails were soaked and very difficult to ride!

1st place: Topeak-Ergon Racing - 8-1 Robert Mennen (GER) / 8-2 Kristian Hynek (CZE)

After the rude awakening of Stage 1, Stage 2 was supposed to be somewhat gentler, but heavy rainfall and muddy conditions posed a brand new challenge. Watch the Highlights of Stage 2.

Stage 3 was the longest day of the 2014 Absa Cape Epic, and was characterized by rolling hills and gravel roads. It had been described as a transition stage – with less demanding terrain – but a persistent wind made for tough conditions.

Yesterday the 11th edition of the CAPE EPIC kicked off with a 27km prologue. Meerendal Wine Estate on the Durbanville Wine Route once again played host for 1.200 mountainbikers from all over the world to kick off the most recognized mountainbike stage race in the world! Results after the prologue:

The sun came out to witness Marco Joubert (RSA) and Pieter du Toit (RSA) of team Imbuko Type Dev breaking away after 70km. The all South African team, wearing the African red jerseys, rode the last 45km of the stage all alone upfront with the chasing pack unable to hunt them down.
