Four-time Absa Cape Epic winner Karl Platt of Germany and Swiss partner Urs Huber (Bulls) laid down a marker for the week ahead by blitzing the course to win Sunday’s prologue.

The Absa Cape Epic route changes every year. The dedicated route team takes two years to plan where in South Africa's rugged Western Cape province riders will test themselves with a distance of around 800km and 15 000m climbing. After rolling off the start ramp the route took riders straight onto Meerendal’s custom-built trails before they tackled the challenging singletrack climb up "Stairway to Heaven" to the top of Dorstberg, a mountaintop boasting magnificent 360 degree views of world famous landmarks such as Table Mountain and Robben Island.

After having bad luck in the first two stages, the 2019 winners and top seeds Manuel Fumic from Germany and Henrique Avancini from Brazil manged to win the third and last & final fourth stage. With 70km and 1 800m of vertical gain standing between Scott-SRAM MTB-Racing and overall victory on the Champs-Élysées of mountain biking at Val de Vie Estate, you could’ve forgiven them for playing it safe and cruising to the finish. Nino Schurter and Lars Forster went into the final stage from Stellenbosch University to Val de Vie Estate with a comfortable eight-minute lead over second-placed Cannondale Factory Racing.
