The seventh stage of the Absa CAPE EPIC 2014 took place in South Africa today. With 69km in distance and 1.800 climbing metres the riders had to climb the same high as in stage 6. However the riders had to get along with the final hurdles, like the climb up Nuweberg on forestry roads, with its steep and washed out descent. For the Grand Finale the riders were welcomed in Lourensford Bowl.

In the women’s race Kenya’s Agnes Mutune and Tadelech Bekele led from the beginning. With little more than two kilometres to go 22 year-old Bekele moved ahead. The pace was not as fast as expected and with the wind during the second half Bekele missed out on a sub 70 minutes finish. Clocking 70:05 she was eight seconds ahead of Mutune (70:13). “I am happy with this win and it is my plan to prepare for a marathon,” Bekele said. Running in third position for most of the race Germany’s Sabrina M...

Running his debut at the distance Leonard Komon won the 34th Vattenfall BERLIN HALF MARATHON with a world-class time of 59:14, just edging out fellow-Kenyan Abraham Cheroben in a sprint finish. While 26 year-old Komon clearly missed the world record (58:23) he wanted to break, the Kenyan still had plenty to celebrate: His time is an unofficial world debut record. He improved the mark of Moses Mosop by six seconds. Fellow-Kenyan Mosop clocked 59:20 in Milan in 2010.

Stage 6 was the “reward day”, full of manicured and purpose-built single track. It was perfect for the cross-country specialists like Schurter and Buys. The weather played along nicely and riders still in the race definitely earned the rewards of Stage 6. Although there were 1 800m of total climbing, riders mostly remembered the amazing single track descents dotted along the route.

The sixth stage of the Absa CAPE EPIC 2014 took place in South Africa yesterday. With 85km in distance and 1.800 climbing metres the route was less brutal than in yesterday`s stage 5! However the riders had to be fully concentrated on the technical demanding single tracks around Oak Valley, as the Top 5 teams in the overall ranking were still close together! Every single mistake or problem would have been unforgiven.

This time it was Rudi van Houts, partner of José Hermida (Multivan Merida Biking). Van Houts crashed on Thursday and even though he started the stage, could not go on. It was another dramatic day at the Absa Cape Epic. Stage 4 was marred with the withdrawals of four-times champion Karl Platt and second-place mixed racer Cherise Stander. Team Bulls’ Platt from Germany has finished all 10 previous editions of the Cape Epic, but was left with no choice but to withdraw from the race because of a knee injury suffered during Stage 2. Stander, who partnered with Theo Blignaut for Team RECM in the mixed race and won Stage 3, had to stop because of breathing diffic...
