Diving 27m into concrete like waters and packed with twists and spins demands a lot of orientation skills. You need to know exactly where you are at every fraction of a second. But how does that work? Orientation in the air, control of your movements and spotting the water – crucial elements in cliff diving. Is it possible to practice „arial awareness“?

Artem Silchenko won his first World Series title in sensational style on Saturday with the last 27- metre cliff dive of the 2013 season - a back armstand with two and a half twists, two and a half somersaults, and a blind entry. Standing on the edge of the platform knowing that he was one threesecond dive away from victory, Silchenko was pure focus as he took off, smashing through the water and then emerging, fists raised, to 9s and 10s from the judges.

Evolution of the sport - The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is in its fifth year in 2013 and the sport keeps progressing every year. Cliff diving is more dynamic than ever and the tricks from 27 metres get more and more complicated. The degree of difficulty increases steadily and this year several athletes break the magical 6.0 hurdles. They perform three somersaults and four twists, for example, or five somersaults in just 3 seconds – is this the limit?
